PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: Latakia (locally known as Al Ladhiqiyah) is located approx 40km S of the Turkish border and is Syria's principal port.
General overview: The traffic handled by the port is diversified and facilities exist to accommodate tankers, Ro-Ros, container ships, general cargo and bulk vessels.
Traffic figures: Approx 3,000,000t of cargo handled annually.
Load Line zone: Summer.
Max size: LOA 240m.
PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION

ETA's: The Port Authorities should be contacted on arrival for instructions, by radio.
Communications: VHF: Ch 16.



NAVIGATION

Sea buoys, fairways and channels: Syrian regulations require ships to approach Latakia on a course of 090° from a position 13nm W of the harbour entrance, keeping between the parallels of 35°30'N  35°32'N.
Pilot: Compulsory. For vessels over 1,000t and for all vessels in bad weather.
The pilot launch, displaying the usual international signals, meets vessels 1.5nm WSW of the breakwater head. Direct contact can be made with the pilots on VHF. Pilots are available from 0600-2200hrs.
Anchorages: The anchorage area extends W of the breakwater and N of Lat 35°30'N. In this area anchorage may be obtained 0.5nm off the breakwater, in depths of 15-20m, sand. This anchorage is open and should only be used temporarily, though the holding ground is good.
Prohibited anchorage: Passage is prohibited E of a line extending NNW from the head of the breakwater. Vessels navigating in this area are required to have a pilot on board.
Tidal range and flow: Negligible.
Dock density: 1030.
Weather: Prevailing winds: SW'ly.
Principal navigation aids: "Ra's Ziyarah" Light (white tower, black bands) is exhibited on the S extremity of Ra's Ziyarah.
The Roman Catholic cathedral, with two prominent belfries, stands on the high slopes of the city 1nm NNW of the Ra's Ziyarah Light structure.
Charts: BA 1036, 2633, 2796. Admiralty Pilot NP49.
Restrictions: Max draft 8.7m in the Old Port; 13.3m in the New Port ("Extension Port").
Tugs: Compulsory. Two tugs are available.


One offshore berth of mooring buoys in 12.2m of water. Max discharge rate 1,500tph.

90 cranes up to 70t
4 x 32t straddle cranes

Transport: Nearest airport: Basel Alasad (20km).
Nearest railway: Latakia.
Public holidays: Mohammedan New Year, Union Day, Revolution Day, Easter, Evacuation Day, Labour Day, Martyr's Day, Prophet's Birthday, Ramadan, War of October, Adha Bayram, Christmas Day and all Fridays.
Working hours: Normally 0700-2300hrs.
Developments: The second stage of the general port expansion includes:
Construction of a secondary breakwater of 1,300m.
Construction of 17 quays with a total length of 4,260m and 11.8m-13.3m draft.
Construction of yards of 180ha.
